In our travels, people in these communities shared meals with us, visiting and sharing stories of times gone by. We learned of the sacrifices families made in order for their children to obtain an education. Kids were sent to Allison-James in Santa Fe and then on to Menaul in Albuquerque. Second Presbyterian aided many of these kids in their religious instruction and spiritual growth while at Menaul. Thus, strong ties were established between the families of Northern New Mexico and Second Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque. We spent time searching for grave sites of ancestors of our very own youth participating in the Mission Trip with much success! Plus we found names on grave sites that people from our congregation shared with us, hoping that we could find their family's resting place and do a little sprucing for them as well.
All in all, it was a very rewarding adventure. And we are not yet done! The same kids will return to Penasco on August 13, 14 to help with Emmanuel Church's Spanish Dinner which serves well over 1,000 meals to folks who come from all along the Espanola Valley just to savor enchiladas, posole, beans, and sopapillas! It does not get any better than this!
